Texas Flood Hero Inspires Courage in Us All (+Workshop Replay and Guest Resource)

by ACM
Jul 21, 2025

The Texas floods happened over a week ago and the losses have been so terrible I’ve struggled to write anything useful about it.

But then… I heard about a brand new member of the Coast Guard who quit his job as an accountant to become a rescue swimmer 6 months ago! He ended up assigned to Camp Mystic and organized the rescue of about 160 people!

And his message to the people he rescued was:

“I’m sorry this happened to you, but you were so brave and tough and that made me a better rescuer.”

He’s right. The camp counselors and young ladies who comforted each other tapped into courage they didn’t know they had. They literally sang through the pain.

If you’re working with high-risk, high need populations, I know you can relate.

The day that someone reaches out for help (or accepts the help they didn’t realize they needed), they are making a brave decision. Let it inspire you to be brave in the therapy room too. Help them find a song through the rain.

Grab your tissues. The story of Coast Guard Petty Officer Scott Ruskin is linked in the Joy Intervention section.

Essential Downloads: A Systems-Based Approach to Clinician Overwhelm

The Working Phase project is about obsessively doing whatever necessary to help therapists like you take care of yourself.

And in last week's supporter workshop, we discussed a significant component of burnout prevention: keeping track of your ideas, tasks, and calendar so you can stop losing important thoughts.

I want you to feel like you know what to do in every session, every time you open your laptop, every time you run an errand.

The chicken-with-its-head-cut-off vibe doesn't look good on anyone. But it happens to us a lot in spite of how smart we are!

That's because this job uses so many parts and facets of our personhood.

So that’s what this workshop is for, to help you access more of yourself, right when you need it.

If you are already a monthly WP Supporter: DO NOT PURCHASE THIS. I already upload all resources into your Library. In fact, reply to me if you can’t find it because I will personally visit your window with my bluetooth speaker if needed, John Cusack-style.

If you haven’t yet become a WP supporter: you can access the replay for just $27.

I charge hundred$$ per hour to write and present these types of custom workshops in other settings, so $27 is an absolute gift. Download it now!

Along with a link to download the replay video, you’ll get:

  • The outline (so you can follow along easily)
  • The slides (for my visual learners)
  • The APA reference list (for my deep readers)
  • And additional recommended free tools (hello action-takers!)

You can download everything on your laptop, phone, whatever! I know you’ll get something great from this and can’t wait to hear all about what you do next.

Intergenerational Exchange: Gift Resource from Dr. Eboni Truss

I love sharing the perspectives and strategies that others have been using to grow and help each other.

So if you have a resource you'd like to share with the community, please reach out to me via reply! I'd love to look it over!

Dr. Eboni Truss reached out to let us know that she isn’t just helping people, she’s kicking off a whole movement for people who want to live more authentically in every moment of the day, not just at work!

If the wins, the titles, the accomplishments aren’t totally working… Or if you find yourself thinking…

“Is this really what I’m meant to be doing or just what I was told I should want?”

…you’re who Dr. Truss created her guide for!

Her 3-Step Guide to Rediscover Purpose + Find Fulfillment was designed for the high-achievers among us who question the version of success we’ve been sold.

What if, instead scrapping everything and starting over from scratch, you could confidently reconnect with the parts of yourself that got buried under pressure, roles, and rules?

With 3 powerful prompts, Dr. Truss gives you actions AND a 7-day plan to help you:

  1. Name what no longer fits,

  2. Reconnect with what lights you up, and

  3. Take action steps to live genuinely, not just “impressively”. (And you know how much we love our practical action steps around here!)

** Get Dr. Eboni Truss’ 3 Step Guide to Rediscover Purpose + Find Fulfillment here. **

You don’t have to tear everything up to get your life back. Just focus on creating a better way forward.

Note: If you’re looking for a few guided journal prompts for yourself or your clients who are deep thinkers, definitely check this out!

“My client graduated! There’s muffins in the kitchen to celebrate!”
Therapy work is super weird for many reasons. One of the strangest parts of our job is the way we have to be extra thoughtful about the question from loved ones: “how was your day?” We are the possibly the last guardians of privacy…which is probably why certain companies are willing to beg, borrow, steal, and manipulate us into letting them record and transcribe our sacred conversations. S...
A Simple, Old-School Trick to Stay Focused and Get Clear About Your Work and Life
Life for many of us, especially as we get older and deal with work and personal changes, can feel like a constant rush. This can sometimes turn into a quiet worry – a feeling that what we do each day doesn't quite match the deeper purpose we're looking for. When it's hard to focus, stress builds up, and tasks pile on, we need to recenter and use our time and skills keep our minds at ease. For ...
The “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” isn’t just hitting clients, it's coming for therapists too. What to expect. (+ Some Audio/Visual joy)
Last week, a very large budget bill was passed in Congress. It affects everything from SNAP, to Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, along with immigration and tax policy.  Because there are so many things in this bill that are concerning, you may have missed the significant changes that are coming for student loan eligibility and repayment. Most of the repayment options (ICR, IBR) for stude...
