Empathy Takeover
Working Phase is a weekly newsletter to help therapists be informed, resilient, and effective in and out of the therapy room. Was this email forwarded to you? Subscribe now to receive the newsletter in your inbox, every Sunday, totally free!
Sometimes someone else says what you feel better than you can.
Helping people excavate and express the inexpressible is what we do.
I'm letting the GOAT of video essays Lindsay Ellis take over this week. She takes us through an excellent discussion of empathy, bullying, and yes, Israel and Gaza.
Her video is presented to you in full, with no qualifications or disclaimers on my part.
I appreciate and endorse her views, and I think that you'll respect the way she shows her work.
She breaks things down in a way that's just not possible in this weekly email format.
It's literally our job to care about people and teach them to care about others.
Don't let politics strip you of your humanity.
You don't have to have keep an "In This House" -style poster on your office wall (although that might be very comforting for your clients depending on the population).
But "holding space" for your clients doesn't mean ignoring real darkness and pain either. Sometimes our old assumptions need challenging.
No, holding space for your clients really means sharing compassion, staying curious, and having hope.
Therapists have the key that can bridge the divisions of the day: ~EMPATHY~.
So continue to learn and grow.
Don't hide from your commitment to humanity.
Please listen and share with an open heart.
