Lessons from a mini-viral moment on LinkedIn this week.

  • Andreana

I got a referral from ChatGPT last weekend, and when I posted about it on LinkedIn, the post blew up.

I expected a couple polite likes, but not much more than that from a LinkedIn post for two reasons.

  1. What I said was pretty mild compared to the way I talk to you in the newsletter.

  2. Professionals on LinkedIn like to Lurk-and-Learn a lot. And I totally get it! It’s awkward to talk about your dreams, goals, and disappointments when your boss, peer, or supervisee could be watching.

No, the real action on LinkedIn is usually in the DMs :).

But here are the issues that got people talking, following, and, yes, also DMing me.

  • AI

  • Clients

  • How to make AI to help Therapists and Clients

  • How to be more Human when AI is so prominent.

So here’s a little secret.

AI isn’t the boogie man, and it isn’t a savior.

“AI” is just a marketing term.

Artificial Intelligence is a marketing shortcut to refer to a cluster of different technologies…some useful, some not.

Google maps real-time traffic data? It's AI now. ChatGPT creating Mad-Lib sentences for you about how wonderful you are? Call it AI. Speech-to-text? Call it AI.

Some of these things are more or less necessary depending on your particular needs.

Using the term "AI" is a hack to sell you the idea of a thing that you want: “faster notes, peace of mind, audit proofing.”

Turns out, it really is a quick, cheap thing to mention in your social media post to get slightly more reach. Now I see why my feed is filled with it.

But “AI” does not describe the things therapists actually wanting from our careers:

  • To feel more skillful.

  • To get more control of the daily and monthly rhythms of this work.

  • To have the confidence to ask for that raise or promotion.

  • To develop the self-trust to file that business paperwork and reduce our reliance on often neglectful systems.

So this is where I announce the launch my "Andreana-bot".

Just kidding.

No, I'm doubling-down on my deepest suspicions.

To get through what's coming next, we're going to need regular rhythms of support, collaboration, growth and rest. In real time. With other Humans.

We need the time, and the INCENTIVES, to actually take advantage of the spaces that can keep us well.

We need to see how that connects to our long term well-being and our clients’ recovery.

Until we have that, we'll stay on the burnout merry-go-round, despite our best efforts.
